The pub is managed by Dougie Clarke and Bernie Devine who have been there for six years.
Their journey in the pub trade started over ten years ago at the Kings Head in Thorpe, Norwich. They moved to the Alby Horseshoes where they held their first ever Beer Festival. The resounding success of their first one and the others that followed prompted them to move back to a pub in Norwich which could offer a great variety of real ales all of the time. After twelve months of extensive renovation by the owner, the Duke of Wellington opened as a Real Ale House in 2000 and the rest is history.
We have a wide variety of clientele, from couples to young students and to the more mature adult. Our soft background music allows those to chat in comfort and enjoy light conversation in a warm and friendly atmosphere.
Our folk music, every Tuedsay, normally comprises of violins, a squeezebox and various percussion. Traditonal pub games are also played, these include Ring the Bull, Shove Ha’Penny, Shut the Box and Cribbage.
As well as our real ales, we also offer a good selection of wines which can be bought by the glass or bottle, Guinness, Lagers, Belgian/German Beers, Norfolk Kingfisher Cider and Eliots Spiced Premium Mulled Wine.
During our renovations, we made an intriguing discovery. In the back seating area of the pub there is a purpose built Air Raid Shelter, constructed during the 2nd World War. It is made of red brick and has a curved tin roof. It is accessed by a trap door and down a winding staircase and is very cosy and dry!
Our large beer garden is great in the summer and a real sun-trap, although there are many large umbrellas which provide welcome shade. We are currently building a pagoda across most of the garden to provide shelter at any time of the year when the new smoking laws come into force.
